Restoring Cars

I was asked to talk about my hobby of restoring cars...

"We" bought this old 1923 Chev from Lee Pays for $3.00. It sat in the back yard for a long time till I had the idea of running it again. I made the body out of sheet metal we found at the dump. You'll notice I had a rumble seat for a passenger. Tires were hard to get and I had all different kinds. Once a tire blew off and the tire kept on rolling down the lane past the house.

I could outrun the neighbor boy who sported a model T Ford stripped down. I fashioned a speedometer which showed 60 MPH going down hill. I used this (Donald was there too) for other reasons like going for the cows. Once I got stuck way up in the hills. One front wheel was off the ground and rear opposite wheel was in the air, so we were imobilized. It took work to get it back to earth. I followed the cows and let them get ahead then goose the bug till I got to the cows. The brakes were only back wheel brakes so it was necessary now to cut a cookie and spin to a stop like an Indy racer.

I wanted to keep this Bug but Donald lost it in a poker game when he played poker with some of those left behind escaping the draft. I have fond memories of this Bug. It took some scrap sheet metal - old roofing and some wood and nails. I made a frame of old boards and used an axe to shape the structural frame. You can call it the fuselage. I used the cycle bar off two old mowers for the back end which shaped it like an airplane. If only I would have had a welder and torch in those days. So it has also been a hobby to restore old cars.

The last one is this Kaiser. You can see the advance design this car had, which 'sunk' the sales. Kaiser quit in 1954. You can research Kaiser to learn about this man and his many factories. I may sell it before completion--if I can. I am getting worn down at nearly 87.

Wouldn't it be great if someone could get a car for $3.00 these days?!

Kelley, you can get a car for $3.00! It's just a Hot Wheel though. Would that work for you?
