We didn't have much by way of ingredients for cooking, but I had the idea that I could make a cake. I found a recipe book, which called for shortening. Pretty soon I found one that said we could use lard. I didn't know that lard was shortening. It was called the Sunshine Cake. It required twelve eggs! I mixed and mixed and mixed and I couldn't get the eggs to mix well, and finally baked it. It had about three layers. In each slice you could find a half moon part of a cooked yolk.
When Ma and Daddy came home, I thought I was going to get a whooping, but Ma was actually proud of me!

Grandpa, how the heck do you remember all this stuff? I'm glad you do, and I'm glad you share your stories with us.
